Design Star Season 7 Recap so far… Who we love, who we hate, who we forgot about…

Design Star Season 7 is in full swing, and we’ve got tons of thoughts on what’s gone down.

designer star season 7

Already eliminated: Yuki Northington (Gah!), Bex Hale (this was a huge loss! she had personality and a pov!), Miera Melba (such a disaster, who would hire her?), Jordan Cappella, Luca Paganico, Kris Swift (he just couldn’t stop being “on” enough to ever seem genuine).

Still in the game are: Britany Simon, Danielle Colding, Hilari Younger, Mikel Welch (gets a little lost in the mix…), Rachel Kate (seems neurotic, but sweet), Stanley Palmieri (memorable for his rustic look and doo rags)

I have a definite favorite, and that is Danielle Colding. After that, I suppose I would favor Britany Simon for the win. Although, before Kris Swift was eliminated, I would have also said he could have won.

Colding is gorgeous, and responsible, and seems to design with a very soulful intent. She takes advice (like when David Bromstad said, “less black and gold!”) and I respect her a lot. Her recent Art Deco lounge area was breathtaking. (And I don’t even like Art Deco!) I feel like I can sense how badly she wants to win this. And I really hope she does take home the win.

Simon has a handicap, and that is that she’s so damn model-gorgeous that you almost want her to fail. But behind the pretty face she actually does have talent and a good eye. You can’t deny that the camera would love her. I also really like her personal style. She seems like a calm designer who works hard.

The person who keeps skating by, oddly, is Hilari Younger. She has crazy, awful ideas (weaving a spandex rug?!) but then manages to pull it together, somehow. She must be using magic. I don’t trust her taste level at all, and I hope it becomes clear to the judges sooner rather than later. On the plus side, I love that she has a lively spirit and knows what a Delorean is!

The challenge that has stayed with me was the “Klassically Kardashian Design” challenge. The first thing that struck me is that Kris Jenner really did go against her daughter’s (Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian) wishes and managed to put the Kardashian back in her name. She’s now Kris Jenner-Kardashian. At least she didn’t totally take outthe “Jenner” part! (Although recent episodes of Keeping up with the Kardashians have proved she doesn’t respect Bruce Jenner a whole hell of a lot.) But that was not the only mind-boggling part to this challenge.

Kardashian-Jenner is rich, doesn’t need more exposure, has designer friends, and yet she still let an early crop of Design Star people (before the losers were weeded out) have control of her entire new office space?! I would have been freaking out. Of course, yes she could change anything later, and yes it was pretty obvious that in keeping to black/white you’d please her….

The room I disliked the most was her office, and it’s because of the small repeating pattern on the wallpaper. That, with the green of the couches reminds me of the 70’s in the  worst way possible. And she’s kept it up, as we’ve seen on her show.

At any rate, I can’t wait to see what other challenges await our designers! Will Vern Yip ever seem less strict? Will David Bromstad ever not look like an orange mannequin? Will we ever see Emily Henderson again? All these questions, and more, will probably never have answers…
